STIIIZY SPONSORS HARDHITTA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP IN SAN FRANCISCO

AMATEUR BOXING AT THE AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTS & CULTURE COMPLEX

It's been more than two decades since STIIIZY’s Community Ambassador, Karim Mayfield, faced a cannabis charge at 18 years old. Today, the San Francisco retired professional boxer and social equity partner of Authentic 415 faces a new challenge: promoting his first amateur boxing event locally in the historic Fillmore section of San Francisco, where he was convicted and changed his life with boxing.

On July 8th, dozens of San Francisco boxing gyms made their way to the African American Art & Culture Complex for a chance to compete, including young men in Karim’s boxing and mentoring program, SoulChamp. The amateur showcase served as a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization aimed at enhancing the lives of San Francisco youth through fitness, boxing, and now, technology.

“We are vetting students right now after the fights,” explained Mayfield on the mic. Participants will be able to learn website building, job readiness skills, and coding taught by software engineer Donte Burney during a free 12-week Boot Camp.

In addition to self-defense training and life skill development, at the core of the program is emotional control, something Mayfield believes is crucial for teenagers everywhere.

The event featured over ten amateur bouts, ranging from youth to adult weight classes. Competitors who impressed the judges walked away with a custom HardHitta Boxing Belt, sponsored by STIIIZY. In between rounds, the audience was also invited to participate in an exhibition match with giant boxing gloves and treated to performances by Mo Betta Mo Chedda.

Mayfield ended the event with a shout-out to his sponsors, local gyms, and the fight fans in attendance. The pro fighter has always been vocal about paying it forward and not forgetting where you came from.  “Thank you, everyone, for coming out to support the next generations of Bay Area champs.”
